How text editing works under the hood, and what it can't do.
Editing existing text vs. adding new text
Changing a word that's already on the page and adding a brand-new text box in empty space are different operations under the hood. Editing existing text tries to match the original font and size; adding new text lets you pick your own formatting freely.
Whiteout and retype — how it actually works
To edit a line of existing PDF text, the tool covers the original text with a matching-color box, then places new, editable text in its place at the same position. This is why edited text stays sharp at any zoom, instead of becoming a blurry pasted-in image.
Editing scanned PDFs
A scanned page is just an image, so there's no underlying text to directly edit — you'd need to run OCR first to get an editable text layer, or use whiteout-and-retype to cover and replace specific areas visually, which works regardless of whether text is selectable.
Fonts when editing
If the PDF's original font is a common one, edits match it closely. Uncommon or embedded custom fonts get substituted with the closest visual match, which can occasionally cause slightly different letter spacing — worth a quick zoom-in check on important documents.
Moving or resizing images
Images on the page can be selected, repositioned, and resized like any object — but the image's own resolution doesn't improve when you enlarge it, and quality degrades if enlarged significantly, the same as resizing any raster image.
What's harder to edit
Complex vector graphics, charts built from multiple layered elements, and precise multi-column layouts can be trickier to edit cleanly than simple paragraph text. Pages you don't touch are left completely untouched, so editing one section never risks the rest of the document.
